Nanoplasty® vs Lapiplasty®: How I Choose the Right Bunion Procedure

In my practice serving Southlake, Fort Worth, and the greater DFW area, bunions are one of the most common conditions I treat. One of the biggest misconceptions patients have is that there is only one way to fix a bunion.

The reality is that modern bunion surgery has evolved significantly. Two of the most advanced options available today are Lapiplasty® and Treace Nanoplasty®.

I perform both procedures—but they are not interchangeable. Choosing the right one depends on the patient’s anatomy, severity of deformity, lifestyle, and surgical goals.

What is Nanoplasty®?

Treace Nanoplasty® is a minimally invasive bunion correction procedure that corrects the deformity through very small incisions, with less disruption to surrounding tissue.

Compared to traditional bunion surgery—and even Lapiplasty—Nanoplasty focuses on:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less soft tissue disruption
  • Potentially less swelling
  • Faster early recovery in the right patient

What is Lapiplasty®?

Lapiplasty® is a powerful 3D correction procedure that addresses bunions at their root—instability at the first tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint.

It is typically my go-to procedure for more severe deformities because it:

  • Corrects the bunion in all three planes
  • Stabilizes the joint to reduce recurrence
  • Provides strong, durable correction

When I Choose Nanoplasty® Over Lapiplasty®

While Lapiplasty is an excellent procedure, there are many situations where Nanoplasty is the better option.

1. Older Patients

In older patients, my priorities often shift slightly:

  • Minimize surgical trauma
  • Reduce swelling and recovery burden
  • Preserve function with less invasive correction

Nanoplasty allows me to achieve correction while being less aggressive on the body, which can be especially beneficial in this population.

2. Smaller or Mild-to-Moderate Bunions

Not every bunion requires a full Lapiplasty correction.

For patients with:

  • Mild to moderate deformity
  • Less joint instability
  • Primarily cosmetic or early symptomatic issues

Nanoplasty provides an effective correction without over-treating the problem.

3. Patients Who Want Smaller Incisions

Many patients specifically ask about:

  • Minimally invasive bunion surgery
  • Smaller scars
  • Less visible surgical changes

Nanoplasty is ideal for patients who prioritize:

  • Cosmetic outcomes
  • Smaller incisions
  • Less soft tissue disruption

4. Patients Concerned About Swelling & Recovery

Swelling is one of the biggest frustrations after bunion surgery.

Because Nanoplasty is less invasive, patients often experience:

  • Less postoperative swelling
  • Easier early recovery phase
  • More comfortable transition back to activity

(That said, all bunion surgeries require proper healing time.)

When I Still Recommend Lapiplasty®

There are many cases where Nanoplasty is not the best option, including:

  • Large or severe bunion deformities
  • Significant joint instability
  • High risk of recurrence
  • Structural issues that require full 3D correction

In these situations, Lapiplasty provides a more definitive and durable correction.

My Surgical Philosophy

The most important decision is not which procedure is “better”—it’s which procedure is right for you.

In my approach at Active Life Foot and Ankle of Texas, I:

  • Evaluate the true cause of the bunion
  • Assess severity and joint stability
  • Consider patient age, activity level, and goals
  • Customize the surgical plan accordingly

This is how we achieve the best long-term outcomes.

Bunion Surgery in Southlake, Fort Worth & DFW

If you’re dealing with a bunion, the key is getting a proper evaluation—not just choosing a procedure based on what you’ve seen online.

At Active Life Foot and Ankle of Texas (ALFA), we offer advanced surgical options, including:

  • Nanoplasty® (minimally invasive bunion surgery)
  • Lapiplasty® (3D bunion correction)

Bottom Line

In my experience:

  • Nanoplasty® is an excellent option for older patients, smaller deformities, and those wanting less invasive surgery with smaller incisions and less swelling
  • Lapiplasty® remains the best choice for more severe, unstable bunions requiring powerful correction

The right procedure depends on the individual—not a one-size-fits-all approach.
